Puerto Ricans

  • More than fifty candidates in Florida’s state and local races are in Orlando Tuesday evening for politics and salsa. The Puerto Rican Bar Association of Florida is hosting its 3rd annual political hob nob with an interactive political forum led by local veteran political journalists for English and Spanish media, a straw poll, and a live band.
  • Central Florida is now home to one of the state’s fastest growing groups: Puerto Ricans. Unlike other Latinos who arrive from other countries, Puerto Ricans, once here, can vote for president of the United States. 90.7’s Renata Sago tells us why Puerto Ricans are choosing not to be affiliated with a major party.
  • More than 800 men, women, and children are enjoying turkey with gravy, candied yams, green beans, and biscuits this afternoon with help from volunteers and staff at the Orlando Union Rescue Mission. The organization’s annual Thanksgiving banquet is expected to draw some of central Florida’s homeless community and newly migrated residents.
  • Central Florida leaders are preparing what’s now the nation’s second largest Puerto Rican population for a historic turnout at the polls this election season. 90.7’s Renata Sago reports, Puerto Rican activists say registering the region’s 800,000 Puerto Ricans is the only way to make sure the island gets a spot on the federal agenda.
