New program aims for jobs for the homeless

A new program aims to match homeless Central Floridians with jobs.

Goodwill Industries is partnering with the Central Florida Commission on Homelessness on the program.

The idea behind Goodsource Staffing Services is that employment can solve some of the problems that go with homelessness.

Bill Oakley of Goodwill Industries of Central Florida says the goal is to place 250 in jobs in the first year.

“We’ll have some of the traditional hospitality, banquet-serving sorts of things that we’ll be seeing established, event management services. We also expect to have opportunities in manufacturing. We expect to have opportunities in call centers.”

Applicants will receive pre-employment training and screening for issues that might prevent their employment like drug abuse.

An estimated 30,000 people are homeless in Central Florida.
