A juvenile green sea turtle rehabilitated at the Florida Keys-based Turtle Hospital has been fitted with a satellite-tracking transmitter and released from a Keys beach to join the 14th Tour de Turtles, a marathon-like race that follows long-distance migration of sea turtles over three months.

Two rehabilitated sea turtles, rescued at different times and locations by the U.S. Coast Guard, have been released off the Florida Keys.

Friday is the official start to sea turtle nesting season in central Florida. The turtles come out of the water usually at night to lay eggs in the sand. Jennifer Winters, with Volusia County’s Environmental Management Division, reminds people a lighting ordinance is now in effect for the protected sea turtle.
