Spotlight: Scottish Drag Queen, Charles Dickens, and Hello Dolly

A performer from Scotland named Mike Delamont flies into Orlando every few months and performs his show, God is a Scottish Drag Queen. He was introduced to local audiences as part of the Orlando Fringe years ago and has apparently built up a gay bar-sized audience. In his latest show, Delamont, dressed in a women’s power suit and sensible pumps skewers everything from Brussel sprouts to the three wise men. God Is A Scottish Drag Queen: the Christmas Special is tonight and Saturday at 8 at Savoy in Ivanhoe Village. The stage musical comedy “The Mystery of Edwin Drood,” based on an unfinished Charles Dickens novel and set in Victorian England, tries to solve the murder of the young and …

Erotic desire, romance, magic and tragedy are mixed to give life to this theatrical satire from Federico García Lorca called Amor de Don Perlimplín con Belisa en su jardín. This play runs at Mad Cow Theatre all weekend long. Now I beg of you, before you buy your ticket, ask the salesperson if the actors in the show have been paid on time. They will be shocked at your question. But that theatre has a publicly known reputation for not paying their actors on time and if you want to support live theatre you want to support those organizations that treat their actors with respect. Otherwise, go see a movie. For more information go to madcowtheatre.com. Orlando Science Center is bringing back …

WORKERS PETITION AGAINST MAD COW THEATRE

More than three weeks ago, Aradhana Tiwari posted on social media what many in Orlando’s local theater community knew as an open secret. The former resident director at Mad Cow Theatre alleged that over the past two years as an employee, the professional theater company had consistently fallen behind in paying her for her work, sometimes for weeks and even months. Before her employment started in 2014, Tiwari says Mad Cow owed her money from when she worked for them as an independent contractor, and two years later, they still hadn’t paid. Such allegations might have sent shockwaves through a different theater community. But in Orlando, most artists reacted to Tiwari’s post with a resigned “me too.” Comment after comment, …
