2018 has been one of the deadliest years for transgender people

2018 has been one of the deadliest years ever for transgender people. The Human Rights Campaign says that so far this year, at least 24 have been killed violently. And no state has more recorded murders of transpeople than Florida. It started Feb. 4 with Celine Walker, shot dead in a Jacksonville hotel room. Four months later Antash’a English died in the hospital from gunshot wounds after she was found lying between two abandoned houses. In June, deputies found Cathalina James, gunned down at another Jacksonville hotel. Less than a month later Sasha Garden’s beaten body was discovered behind an Orlando apartment complex. LGBTQ advocates in Florida seek statewide anti-discrimination protection

Gov. Rick Scott remained mum this week about signing an anti-discrimination order protecting LGBTQ state employees in the wake of the Trump administration’s latest attempt to roll back federal protections for transgender and gender non-conforming people. Since the Pulse massacre, LGBTQ advocates in Florida have pleaded with Scott to sign an executive order protecting state employees against discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Fifth Homicide of Trans Woman in Florida This Year

A black transgender woman was shot to death in southwest Florida last week, making her the fifth trans woman to be murdered in this state within the past seven months. Twenty-year-old Londonn Moore was found lying in the road around Sept. 8 in North Port, several miles away from her hometown of Port Charlotte. After the homicide, North Port Police and several local media outlets have misgendered Moore and referred to her dead name. Moore’s murder comes two months after 27-year-old Sasha Garden, another black trans woman, was found dead with signs of trauma at the back of an Orlando apartment complex on July 19. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office say Garden’s case remains “active and open.” The first rash …

What it’s like to be queer and Latinx in Orlando now

A gunman walked into Orlando’s packed gay nightclub Pulse during Latin Night in the early hours of June 12 and unleashed a siege of terror that would ultimately kill 49 people and wound 53. The people who left us forever included an accountant, a bouncer, college students, dancers, a perfume salesman, salon owners and mothers and fathers. And it’s important to note that although the victims were from different races and sexual identities, they were overwhelmingly composed of queer Latinos, Latinas and Latinxs, a gender-nonspecific term. Nearly half of them were Puerto Rican, but there were Mexicans, Dominicans and Cubans, too, and several were undocumented. Locally, LGBTQ Latinxs, like Equality Florida’s Carlos Guillermo Smith, are grappling with the fact that …
