• The ailing Indian River Lagoon is getting another million dollars in improvements. The money will go toward locally proposed projects. The projects include shoreline stabilization, public education and street improvements aimed at treating storm water runoff. The Environmental Protection Agency will provide nearly $600,000. The rest will be local matching funds. Recipients include Cape Canaveral, the University of Central Florida, Brevard Zoo and Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute. The Indian River Lagoon stretches the length of nearly half of Florida’s East Coast. Widespread water quality problems have killed off pelicans, dolphins and manatees and more than half of the lagoon’s sea grass.
