This week marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission that sent the first humans to the moon.

As part of his week-long series on the topic for WMFE, 90.7’s space reporter Brendan Byrne teamed up with photographer Jim Hobart for a project called “Apollo: Then and Now.”

They found famous Space Coast images from the Apollo era and photographed the exact same scene as it is now, fifty years later, setting the two images side-by-side for comparison. A movable slider allows the viewer to inspect each photo separately, as well.

The finished product is elsewhere on our website: find “Apollo: Then and Now” at this link.

Hobart says finding those precise places fifty years later was a little harder than he expected – so much has changed, and many locations that we now view as historically important were not preserved.
