Spotlight: “Les Miserables” at Orlando Shakespeare Theater
Friday is opening night for Orlando Shakespeare Theater’s production of the beloved musical “Les Miserables,” the storied company’s largest single show to date.
The production features Broadway performers and local talent with full orchestral accompaniment, along with some of the most demanding sets and technical design OST has ever attempted, according to artistic director Jim Helsinger. But he says the work has been worth it – challenges have been met, preview performances have earned standing ovations, and ticket sales are already breaking records.
For “Spotlight” this week, Helsinger tells 90.7’s Nicole Creston about OST’s production of the world’s longest-running musical, often called “Les Mis” by its fans. He begins with an overview of characters and themes featured in the play based on Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel.
