90.7 WMFE FINALIST FOR FOUR FLORIDA AP AWARDS

REPORTS ON MASS SHOOTING RESPONSE, PTSD, CLIMATE CHANGE AND ELECTION ARE NOMINATED

ORLANDO — 90.7 WMFE reporters are finalists in the hard news, investigative, series/franchise reporting and public affairs categories for the 2018 Florida Associated Press Professional Broadcasters Contest.

The nominations are for stories examining the response to the Pulse shooting, PTSD in first responders, climate change in Florida and the tight gubernatorial race. WMFE partnered with two nonprofit journalism organizations last year, ProPublica and Florida Center for Investigative Reporting (FCIR), for series on PTSD in first responders and climate change, respectively.

Here are 90.7 WMFE’s finalists in the Radio I classification:

Feature | Hard News: Brendan Byrne, WMFE-FM, "After Tight Gubernatorial Race, Ron DeSantis Claims Victory"

Investigative: Abe Aboraya, WMFE-FM & Charles Ornstein, ProPublica, "'Update on Active Shooter?' How Orlando Authorities Failed to Prepare for a Mass Shooting Like Pulse"

Series / Franchise Reporting: Amy Green, WMFE-FM & Trevor Aaronson, FCIR, "State Climate Change Denial Leaves Coastal Communities on Their Own to Face the Risks"

Public Affairs: Brendan Byrne, Matthew Peddie and Abe Aboraya, WMFE-FM & Charles Ornstein, ProPublica, "Intersection: PTSD & First Responders"

Thirty seven radio and television stations submitted 581 entries in the contest, which featured news and sports stories from 2018.
