90.7 WMFE Announces New Weekend Lineup

90.7 WMFE ANNOUNCES NEW WEEKEND LINEUP

CAR TALK AMONG PROGRAMS LEAVING LINEUP AS HIDDEN BRAIN, THE LATIN ALTERNATIVE, ON THE MEDIA AND MORE DEBUT

July 10, 2019 – 90.7 WMFE debuts a new weekend programming lineup on Saturday, July 13.

“Weekends are all about diverse storytelling, investigative journalism and the arts,” said Stephen Yasko, director of content and audience development. “We’re adding some new shows and moving a few around to create an even more enjoyable listening experience.”

Among the programs leaving the schedule is Car Talk, which has been a part of 90.7 WMFE and public radio for decades. Cohost Tom Magliozzi died in 2014, and the show has been in repeats and best of editions since. Car Talk discontinued the production of all new and repackaged shows in 2017.

“Tom and Ray have been part of my personal and professional life from my first day in public radio back in the ’80s,” Yasko said. “I’m saddened to see this part of our collective experience come to an end. It’s hard to say goodbye to old friends.”
Read a letter from Ray Magliozzi about his brother's passing and his feelings on public radio moving forward.

“But with change, comes an opportunity to implement a fresher, more vibrant weekend schedule,” Yasko added. “WMFE is committed to bringing diverse audiences to the air as we explore our hearts and minds through storytelling, journalism and the arts.”

Joining the schedule are Hidden Brain, hosted by NPR social science correspondent Shankar Vedantam, and On the Media, which looks at the popular and difficult stories and dissects how media handled them.

And, contemporary music programs World Café, The Latin Alternative and eTown will replace Hearts of Space and Echoes.

Due to the shift, you’ll get to hear some of your favorite programs such as Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me, Ask Me Another, Radiolab and This American Life earlier in the day. Snap Judgment moves to Saturday and TED Radio Hour moves to Sunday.

Here’s a bird’s eye view of what you can expect:

“Saturdays will feature storytelling, investigative reporting and programs produced with a hipper, more engaging vibe,” Yasko said. “They’ll fit together sonically and editorially. At night, listeners will find contemporary music drawn from diverse musicians and filled with interviews and information about their craft.

“Sundays will feature news and media analysis, inspiration and relaxed features. At night, we will continue with contemporary music and interviews. I hope you’ll listen and enjoy.”
