Judith Smelser assumed her role as President & General Manager of WMFE after a long career in public media and journalism. Smelser began her journalism career in Washington, DC and moved to Central Florida in 2004 for a position in WMFE’s newsroom, where she worked for nearly eight years -- first as an award-winning reporter and later as news director. She led the station’s enterprise coverage of multiple hurricanes, elections, and the final Space Shuttle missions, among other important regional stories. She left WMFE in 2011 for Colorado Public Radio, where she held several newsroom leadership roles before moving back to Orlando to launch Smelser Editing & Consulting, serving more than 30 public media organizations across the country with consulting and training services. In addition to leading WMFE, Smelser serves on the Executive Committee of the Board for Florida Public Media.
