Nelson: SpaceX Expansion in Texas is Small Blow for Space Coast


• August 5, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando – Sen. Bill Nelson says there’s still hope for a multi-user spaceport on the Space Coast, even after SpaceX’s decision to expand in Texas rather than Florida. The Central Florida Democrat says discussions are underway among NASA, the Air Force and Federal Aviation Administration to carve out commercial launch space here. SpaceX already launches from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and plans to launch from an old shuttle pad at Kennedy Space Center. But the space company also wants a commercial launch site free of government regulation, which is why it will build a site in Texas. • August 6, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando – Five years after the end of the worst recession in a generation, no region is more troubled by foreclosures than Central Florida. The crisis is resolving in most of the rest of the country. But here, where houses continue to go up for auction, families left homeless by foreclosure face a long recovery. The Kelloggs are one of those families. Paul Kellogg and his wife Judie moved in to their new home about a year ago with their two children, 21-year-old Dominique and 18-year-old Raymond. Access to Healthcare a Challenge for Central Florida’s Homeless


• WMFE, Orlando-According to the latest state report, the majority of Florida’s homeless are low-income, childless, non-veterans under age 60. It’s a likely formula for being medically uninsured. As part of our series on Homelessness in Central Florida, we look at how access to insurance and health care continues to be a struggle for those living on the streets. Vincent Williams and dozens of men line up outside an emergency homeless shelter in downtown Orlando. This has been his routine for almost three years. Crist Opens Office in Orlando, Pledges Education Support


• Charlie Crist opened his first gubernatorial campaign office in Orlando on Wednesday. Crist, along with his running mate Annette Taddeo-Goldstein, addressed a crowd of supporters outside the headquarters on education The Crist for Governor campaign office is on the corner of Alafaya and Colonial, just across the street from the University of Central Florida. Crist promised supporters if elected he would increase Bright Future scholarships for state college education.
