Regional Unemployment Continues Climb, Now 6.3 Percent


Metro Orlando’s unemployment rate continues to climb.  Today’s report from the state shows it was 6.3 percent in July, up from 5.9 the previous month. That means it’s now higher than the national and state rate of 6.2 percent. Central Florida’s unemployment rate has been rising since April when it was 5.4 percent, but it’s now a full point lower than a year ago.  Today’s report also shows the total numbers of jobs in Florida is down from last month but up from July 2013. Spotlight: Local Author’s Tupperware Book Heads to Hollywood


Brownie Wise was a pioneering business woman heading up the sales division of the Orlando-based Tupperware company. Local news reporter and author Bob Kealing chronicled her life in the company and Central Florida in his 2008 book ‘Tupperware Unsealed.’ The book is set to be made into a movie, staring Sandra Bullock and directed by Tate Taylor. 90.7’s Matthew Peddie spoke with Kealing about the life of Brownie Wise in Central Florida.

Blake Bortles Impresses in Jaguars Preseason


Former UCF Quarterback Blake Bortles saw his second NFL preseason game this week with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Despite a 20 – 19 loss to the Chicago Bears, third-overall pick Blake Bortles impressed on Thursday night. The rookie QB took over for veteran Chad Henne in the second-half. He completed 12 of 17 passes for 130 yards and a touchdown with no turnovers. Bortles performance followed another strong showing in week one against Tampa. The Jaguars staff announced he will be on the bench during the regular season with Henne as starting quarterback. In his final season with UCF Bortles helped propel the Knights to a Fiesta Bowl win. The artist known as “Kittens of Industry” is doing nine 2-artist shows this year because “all kittens have 9 lives”. Tell that to Friskey, Moomers, and all the other cats I’ve owned over the years. Anyways, The first show will feature Kittens of Industry and the artist known as Wolfrich. This “slacker-fied eye-feast of new art” opened tonight and will be hanging until the 2nd week in September inside the bar/arcade/gallery called BART at 1205 N. Mills Avenue in Orlando.
