ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Two more Florida residents have been sentenced for posing as Department of Homeland Security agents in a scheme to get victims to pay them money.
Court records show 27-year-old David Jones received nine years in federal prison this week, and 26-year-old John Mack received four years. They pleaded guilty in January to charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud.
Prosecutors say Jones, Mack and four other Orlando-area residents posted online dating profiles and corresponded with victims who believed they were talking to an adult woman. They later contacted their victims, posing as agents who alleged the woman in the dating profile was underage. Authorities say the victims were told they could wire payments in lieu of being arrested for soliciting a minor.
