Darryl Owens: More Should Be Done For Survivors Of FL's Closed Dozier School

Darryl Owens Perspectives

Members of the Florida cabinet have apologized to former students of a reform school for boys where abuse allegations first surfaced more than 100 years ago…and dozens of unidentified bodies were recently discovered.

The Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys closed in 2011, and shortly thereafter, University of South Florida researchers began an investigation that unearthed 51 bodies nearby. The discovery seems to corroborate reports of horrific abuse suffered by students, dating back to the school’s opening in 1900.

Lawmakers are moving a pair of bills for former students of the closed school, but some say more needs to be done. Among them is former Orlando Sentinel columnist and editorial writer Darryl Owens.
