Emergency Managers Watch St. John's River for Flooding

Emergency managers in Central Florida are keeping a close watch on the swollen St. John’s River as wet weather continues.

Lake, Volusia and Seminole Counties are all experiencing high water along the St. John’s River.

In Seminole County, several parks have been closed because of flooding.

County emergency manager Alan Harris says Mullet Lake Park, C S Lee Park and the Lake Jessup boat ramp are closed.

“The docks are under the water, the parks have water inside of them now, the picnic areas are unusable. It’s unsafe for anyone to try and launch a boat there or even come up to it," says Harris.

Harris says he and other emergency managers are watching the forecast to see if flood control measures are needed later in the week.

“There’s no storm water systems that aren’t already full now," he says.

"It’s pretty much everywhere, from New Smyrna Beach all the way down to Orlando and up to Astor in Lake County, so there’s not many places we can divert water or anything like that."

Flood control measures include laying in sandbags, plotting alternate routes for school buses and arranging for shelters.

Harris says he’s been in contact with the Red Cross to make shelter preparations.

He says county staff have also been working to keep storm water systems clear of debris to prevent localized flooding.
