Intersection: SunRail Turns Three

SunRail turned three this week. It opened to great fanfare in May 2014, and riders took advantage of free travel for the first two weeks and packed the trains. But since then, fewer people than expected have hopped aboard. We hear from the Florida Department of Transportation’s Steve Olson and from transportation writer Dan Tracy about how the fledgling commuter rail is doing, three years on.

Composer Thad Anderson plays an instrument of his own invention called a ‘Vibrakit’. It’s a combination of vibraphone and drum kit. His work ‘Northbound’, was inspired by a trip on SunRail. We stopped by Anderson’s studio at the University of Central Florida to hear him play a couple movements from the piece.

SunRail May Pilot Saturday Service Soon

SunRail is planning to try out Saturday service from October through January. In a letter to potential investors, Mayor Buddy Dyer said the October-January window has major events happening downtown almost every Saturday.

Federal Dollars Arrive For SunRail Expansion

Congressman John Mica says federal dollars are on the way to fund the southern expansion of SunRail. A little more than $63 million dollars will help build stations and signals along the new four-stop extension stretching from Sand Lake Road to Kissimmee.
