Space Shuttle Atlantis lifted off from Kennedy Space Center at 11:26 a.m. on July 8th, on the final mission of NASA’s 30-year-old shuttle program. That historic day is already creating monumental uncertainty in Brevard County and on the Space Coast. About 9,000 people in the area work on the shuttle program, and many have done so for their entire career. Most of them are now losing their jobs, with major repercussions for their own families and for the region's economy. In the days leading up to the final launch, 90.7’s Morning Edition and 90.7’s Intersection broadcast special coverage focusing on the shuttle's impact on the local area and the future of the Space Coast's aerospace business and workforce in a post-shuttle world.

Florida Governor Rick Scott came into office promising a complete overhaul of the state’s education system. Suggestions from his transition team included: letting parents spend state money on private schools or home-schooling; making it easier for kids to transfer from one public school to another; and crafting a new teacher merit pay program and phasing out teacher tenure.

When Florida voters go to the polls this fall, they will be deciding the fate of six proposed constitutional amendments on complex issues ranging from class size to redistricting to development and land use. Starting on October 11, 90.7 WMFE-FM will help listeners understand all the proposals and the arguments surrounding them with a week-long amendment series produced by the Florida Public Radio Network. Tune in to 90.7 FM during Morning Edition at 6:35 a.m. and 8:35 a.m. October 11-15, as reporters from public broadcasting stations around the state examine the amendments one by one.

Of all the things that define Central Florida, Interstate 4 may be one of the most influential. Hundreds of thousands of people travel I-4 each day, and whether you love it or hate it, there’s no doubt the highway has transformed the region’s economy, politics and culture. Next week, 90.7 WMFE FM takes time to examine aspects of I-4’s impact on the area. Join us on a cultural journey into I-4’s past and future.
