Winter Park Daycare Reopens With Safety Upgrades After Fatal Car Crash

June 4, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando - The Winter Park KinderCare is reopening two months after a car plowed into the building, killing a 4-year-old girl and injuring a dozen other children. There have been some safety-related upgrades to the property.

Thick concrete planters filled with flowers - and reinforced with steel - now stretch along the front wall outside the Goldenrod Road daycare. Barricades of metal and wood ring the rest of the building. A statement from KinderCare officials says it’s all part of an effort to provide parents and students peace of mind that a tragedy like the April 9th car crash could not happen again.

Authorities say 38-year-old Robert Corchado crashed his Dodge Durango SUV into another car, sending that car careening into the daycare and through a classroom. Four-year-old Lily Quintas was killed, and thirteen other children and one adult were injured.

Corchado fled the scene, later turning himself in to authorities. He remains in jail for charges related to the accident, along with drug trafficking and possession charges after authorities found various narcotics, a measuring scale, and $5,000 in his SUV.

The facility partially reopened Monday. KinderCare says it’s aiming to welcome all of its students and teachers back “soon.”
