Embraer Announces 600 New Jobs For Melbourne

October 29th, 2013 | WMFE- Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer is expanding its factory in Melbourne. In a press conference at Melbourne Airport Tuesday the company said it would start work on a new production line next year.

Embraer says it will start producing mid-size Legacy 500/450 business jets at its Melbourne Airport plant by 2016.

The expansion will add 600 new jobs at the factory, where Embraer already assembles the smaller Phenom 100/300 jets.

Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast president Linda Weatherman says along with Embraer’s new engineering and technology center, the company will eventually employ about 1,000 people in the area.

“We have a number of companies here that employ quite a bit," says Weatherman.

"We have Harris corporation of course, and Northrop Grumman just announced 1,000 jobs for their manned center of excellence recently within the last 60 days, but [Embraer] certainly will be one of the most significant players here.”

Weatherman says the final details of an incentive deal still need to be worked out for the expansion to go ahead.

Governor Rick Scott also spoke at the announcement.

He said Embraer had been a good partner for the Space Coast, which lost thousands of jobs with the closure of the space shuttle program two years ago.
