'Pet Rescue by Judy' Facing Down Construction Challenges for Shelter's Permanent Home

August 21, 2013 | WMFE - For Judy Sarullo of Pet Rescue by Judy, a new permanent facility for her no-kill animal shelter is a dream come true. But the volunteer-powered construction project has hit a snag at its halfway mark. One of the two historic Sanford buildings Sarullo recently received in a surprise anonymous donation needs a new fire suppression system.

After moving eleven times in her 21 years of operation, Sarullo says she’s overwhelmed by the support from individuals and local businesses that is making the $1.2 million facility possible. But now she has to raise more funds for the fire suppression system.

“We’ve very fortunate because one wonderful company donated all the sprinkler heads which saved me thousands and thousands," says Sarullo. "So, from something that was going to be close to 50-something thousand dollars, we now have it down to $26,000 to get it completed so we can go to the next step.”

Pet Rescue by Judy’s second building will eventually be a low-cost spay/neuter clinic. Both buildings are adjacent to Sanford’s dog park.

Sarullo says she’s adding about a month to her construction timetable to allow for fundraising for and installation of the fire suppression system. She’s now hoping to open the shelter in December.
