Orlando Conference Promotes Crime Prevention in Black Communities

May 30, 2013 | WMFE - Friday is the last day of a conference here in Orlando aimed at combating crime in black communities. About 1,200 people from 15 states are at the conference, which is organized by the state's attorney general office and the Florida Consortium of Urban Leagues.

Daniel Gilmore is a coordinator of the conference.

"Crime is not a part of the black heritage. And so we try to promote that we don't have to settle for a lot of the problems and ills that face many of our neighborhoods and communities, that there are things that we can do."

Workshops address education and employment – even how music can be a negative influence.

About 400 middle and high school students are at the conference. One session gives them the chance to voice their concerns about peer pressure and other issues they're facing.
