Fewer Sea Turtles Nest in Cool Spring Weather

May 10, 2013 | WMFE - Fewer sea turtles are nesting this spring at Canaveral National Seashore.

The park has about a dozen nests. This time last year the park had almost 200. John Stiner of Canaveral National Seashore thinks it's because of the cooler weather.

"It kind of reduces their activity, and they just don't tend to come in to lay their eggs when the water's cooler."

He says not to worry, though. Sea turtles don't nest every year, and in general sea turtle populations are up. Last year the park had a total of 6,000 – the most ever.

Stiner believes more sea turtles will nest as the weather warms up. Nesting season continues until September.
