Sanford Hires New Police Chief

February 15th, 2013 | WMFE - Cecil E. Smith, Deputy Chief of Police in Elgin, Illinois, formally accepted the position after being offered the job two weeks ago.

Smith is expected to start the job, which has a salary of $114,000, on April 1st.

Smith said in a statement he wants to create a partnership with the community and move forward.

Sanford has been without a permanent police chief since former Chief Bill Lee was let go last June in the wake of criticism over the investigation into the shooting death of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin.

George Zimmerman, the former neighborhood watch volunteer charged with second-degree murder over the shooting, is due to stand trial in June.
