December 27, 2012 | WMFE - Every family has its unique holiday traditions. In Florida, the holiday feast often comes with a tropical twist including this tradition which involves one of the few foods that can truly be called "Floridian." From member station WUSF in Tampa, Robin Sussingham tags along with her father as he casts his net for mullet and then prepares it in a wood smoker.

For Robin Sussingham’s family, the traditional holiday food is smoked mullet.

Her father, Bob Trohn, has been catching and smoking mullet at his home on the river for more than a quarter century.

When the extended family congregates there at Christmastime, there's always enough smoked mullet to eat and to give away to friends.

Robin followed her father around the dock one weekend, to see how it's done.
