October 18, 2012 | WMFE- The new home for retired space shuttle Atlantis is taking shape at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Atlantis will roll into the 90,000 square foot building on November 2nd, but it will take another 8 months to complete the display hall.

Next month Atlantis will travel nearly ten miles by road to its new home, a 116 foot tall structure at the visitor complex that’s currently open on one side.

Workers will start filling in the final wall of the building as soon as the shuttle’s inside.

Project development and construction director Tim Macy says the display is on track to open in July 2013.

“I’m really confident in the schedule," says Macy.

"I mean, we’ve built in some weather days that we haven’t had to take advantage of in terms of the exterior of the building, and as anyone will tell you, once you get in and you get sealed up, you can control your own destiny.”

Macy says building the $100 million display hall has provided a boost to the North Brevard County economy.

Up to 150 people at a time are working on the project, which broke ground in January.
