Sanford Announces Top Five Picks for New Police Chief

January 9, 2012 | WMFE - The City of Sanford on Wednesday named five finalists in its search for a new Police Chief, and the public is invited to help narrow down the candidate pool. Citizens also played a role in the decision to oust the previous chief.

The finalists include police department deputy chiefs from two different New York districts, one currently serving in Nassau County, another in the City of Rochester. Another candidate is deputy chief in Elgin, Illinois, and two Floridians round out the top five – a deputy chief from Clearwater and a former North Miami chief who’s now an investigator in the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office.

Sanford officials say the public can meet all five candidates at a City Hall reception when they come to town on Tuesday, January 15th. They’ll also hold an open forum so the candidates can introduce themselves and answer questions from residents.

Former Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee was ousted last June amid widespread criticism over what some called delays in the arrest of George Zimmerman. Zimmerman now faces second-degree murder charges for fatally shooting unarmed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin last February.
