Maitland Walkers Hope 2014 Brings Expansions

A group of walkers in Maitland kicked off the New Year by not only showing their commitment to exercise- but by showing their devotion to a city wide initiative to promote walking. They're hoping 2014 will mean an expansion of their program.

Because the Maitland walks are held on Thursdays, Maitland got to host the first community walk of 2014. The weekly community walks- launched with support from Healthy Central Florida, take place on different days in Maitland, Eatonville and Winter Park. Rainy weather made the 6:30am meeting time for Maitland even darker than usual, but that didn’t stop Vicki Freed from joining the group for the first time.

“I’m getting married in June and I want to look good at the wedding , so back to exercising on a regular basis,” she says.

The Maitland walks hit their one year anniversary in November.  The group is small, about eight people, but it’s dedicated. This morning’s walk was centered around Lake Lilly, but this year coming should bring some expanded and improved paths to make walking for exercise more accessible to other Maitland neighborhoods. The Thursday walkers are also hoping they’ll attract more walkers this year. Vicki Freed is out here because Betsy Fulmer invited her.

“It’s not all about the exercise, it’s about new faces, new conversations and also about the beauty of our city at this time of day, dark, erie looking, just, day is about to start and it’s a beautiful time,” she says.

Fulmer says an early morning walk can really set the tone for the day, perhaps it can set the tone for the new year as well.
