Central Floridians to Join Commemorative March on Washington

August 21, 2013 | WMFE - A group of Central Floridians will join tens of thousands this weekend in the nation's capital for the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. The march is best-remembered for Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech. Three buses and a van will leave from Central Florida to join marchers tracing the 1963 route on Saturday.

Lawanna Gelzer is president of the National Action Network in Central Florida. Gelzer says the objective is to revive the memory of the civil rights movement for a new generation -- like her sister, who is 16 years younger.

"So her life experiences is not being sent to the back of the bus, or being in an African-American school and being bused out of your community. She doesn't have some of those experiences that I have."

Gelzer expects voting rights will be among the issues discussed at the march, after the Supreme Court's ruling striking down part of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

She also expects discussion on health care, stand your ground and next year's midterm elections.

Events are planned in Washington throughout next week.
