MAVEN arrives at Mars After 10-Month Journey From Space Coast


NASA’s MAVEN spacecraft is finally orbiting Mars, after a 10-month journey that began on Florida’s Space Coast. The spacecraft has been busy gathering data even before arriving at the Red Planet Sunday. MAVEN is the first spacecraft to explore Mars’ upper atmosphere. Pamela Conrad of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland says since leaving Earth the spacecraft has been busy gathering data from deep space. “So that as it gets between Earth and Mars it understands the difference in the environment of Mars with respect to those interactions between the sun and the Mars atmosphere and what just happens in deep space.” MAVEN will help scientists understand how atmospheric and climate changes transformed Mars from a world where large, …

Symphony, Waltz and Illustrations


The Orlando Philharmonic Presents its opening night concert Saturday night at 8:30 at the Bob Carr Theatre. This season opener is led by Mexican-born Alondra de la Parra, a fast rising young conductor and will feature the Symphony number 1 by Mahler along with music by Mozart and Mexican composer Arturo Marquez. Maestro De la Parra is one of five international finalists in the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra’s international music director search.

Spotlight: Artistic Directors Reveal Cirque du Soleil


Spotlight now swings through trapeze artistry and choreographed acrobatics to land on the stages of Cirque du Soleil. Through Sunday, September 21, the innovative circus company is performing its traveling show, Varekai, at Orlando’s Amway Center. Central Florida has a resident Cirque du Soleil show – La Nouba at Downtown Disney. To mark Varekai’s visit, 90.7’s Amy Kiley spoke with the artistic directors of both shows. Varekai’s Fabrice Lemire was on the phone, and La Nouba’s Daniel Ross was in studio. Ross began by explaining how Cirque du Soleil transcends the typical three-ring acts. NASA Awards $6.8 Billion Contracts to Boeing and SpaceX


SpaceX and Boeing will be the two firms sending future U.S. astronauts into space. NASA officials said the two companies were awarded a $6.8 billion dollar contract to transport astronauts to the International Space Station from Cape Canaveral. That is a huge boon for Central Florida, as it now boosts the region’s identity as an all-in-one commercial space port. The launching of astronauts to the International Space Station will begin by 2017.
