Darryl Owens: For West Orange Relief School, County Leaders Finally Get It Right

After a marathon public meeting Tuesday, the Orange County Commission cleared the way for construction of a relief high school in west Orange County. The approval comes after more than a year of wrangling between commissioners and the Orange County School Board over the project, the property, the reaction of some nearby residents, and the needs of students in the nearest public high school that's currently 800 kids over capacity.

Orlando Sentinel editorial writer and columnist Darryl Owens joined 90.7's Nicole Creston to share his thoughts on the outcome of Tuesday’s meeting, what it took to get that far, and what happens next.

Nicole came to Central Florida to attend Rollins College and started working for Orlando’s ABC News Radio affiliate shortly after graduation. She joined Central Florida Public Media in 2010. As a field reporter, news anchor and radio show host in the City Beautiful, she has covered everything from local arts to national elections, from extraordinary hurricanes to historic space flights, from the people and procedures of Florida’s justice system to the changing face of the state’s economy.
