Audio Storytelling Workshops

Audio storytelling has come a long way since a clever sound guy first clopped together two coconut shells to fake a galloping horse. And the Chicago-based Third Coast International Audio Festival wants you to know about it. This group of sonic connoisseurs is dedicated to showcasing radio and podcasts from around the world. Since 2009, they’ve put on a Filmless Festival, sometimes called “Sundance for Radio,” collecting the very best of what they’ve heard. This weekend, it happens in a city other than Chicago for the first time.

On April 23rd and 24th, the Gallery at Avalon Island in downtown Orlando plays host to the festival meant to delight ears and brains. The main event is Saturday night’s Filmless Screening, a curated assortment of vivid sounds and stories accompanied by original animation. (Purists can simply close their eyes.) Sunday morning brings a workshop on getting started in podcasting.

But the most intriguing event of the fest is the one that kicks it off Saturday at 6 p.m. At “Podcast Therapy,” Third Coasters promise to solve audience members’ problems using their encyclopedic radio knowledge. Come in with a predicament; leave with a prescription from the “sonic medicine bag.” Or at the very least, a new show to replace that “Serial”-shaped hole in your heart.
